Treatment and Disposal of Municipal Solid Waste in Bangladesh

An open discussion session via Google Meet was conducted on 21st October 2021 with a Non-Government Organization (NGO), CNRS based in Cox’s Bazar of Bangladesh. The invited speaker was Nadim Hossain, the Project Manager for UN WFP-CNRS-SMEP project. The speaker emphasized that management of municipal solid waste (MSW) is crucial for urban dwelling, especially in developing countries. The findings of the discussion led to the understanding that the rate of generation of solid waste worldwide is around 11 billion tons and developing countries like Bangladesh, contribute more towards solid waste compare to their developed counterparts.

The researchers revealed that the most common MSW disposal system in Bangladesh is open crude dumping (OCD). It is an uncontrolled waste disposal system. Currently, Matuail and Amin bazar in Dhaka city uses these dumpsites. About 88% of the MSW is dumped at Matuail and around 14.38% of the dumped wastes are recycled at Amin Bazar.
