WUB Students Participate in Harmony Festival 2025: Exploring Cultural Diversity

The Bangladesh Tourism Board hosted a vibrant three-day Harmony Festival from January 10-12, 2025, at the Kakiachhara Government Primary School grounds near the Bangladesh Tea Research Institute in Srimangal Upazila, Moulvibazar. The festival celebrated the rich cultural heritage and diversity of the local ethnic communities of Bangladesh.
On January 12, 2025, the students of the Department of Tourism and Hospitality Management (THM) at the World University of Bangladesh (WUB) attended the festival, led by Professor Nasimul Azim, Director of the department, and coordinated by Md. Abdul Latif Mahmud, Assistant Professor. Mr. Md. Shafiqul Islam, Deputy Director of Accounts, and Mr. Abdullah Al Faisal, Senior Administrative Officer also participated in the program.

The Harmony Festival 2025 featured captivating showcases of cultural heritage by numerous ethnic groups, including the Khasi, Garo, Manipuri, Tripura, Sabar, Kharia, Rikiasan, Baraik, Kanda, Rajbalwab, Bhuiyan, Santal, Orao, Gorite, Munda, Kurmi, Bhumij, Bunarji, Lohar, Ganju, Kara, and Teli communities.

The festival offered attendees a unique cultural experience through traditional competitions such as archery and bamboo pole climbing by the Khasi community, along with intricate betel and bamboo crafts. The artistry of handloom weaving by the Tripura and Manipuri communities was also showcased, featuring vibrant patterns and techniques that highlighted their rich cultural heritage.

The festival provided WUB students with an opportunity to immerse themselves in the traditions, artistry, and lifestyles of Bangladesh's diverse ethnic communities. This hands-on exposure allowed students to connect their theoretical knowledge of cultural tourism with real-world applications, enhancing their understanding of the integral role culture plays in the tourism and hospitality industry.

Speaking about the experience, Professor Nasimul Azim highlighted the importance of such events in broadening students' perspectives and fostering appreciation for cultural diversity. He emphasized that the knowledge gained from such interactions would significantly contribute to their professional growth in the field of tourism management.
