SEMINAR ON “UCCHO SHIKKHAR MANONNOYON: PROTIBONDHOKOTA O AMADER KORONIO”

World University of Bangladesh organized a seminar titled “Uccho Shikkhar Manonnoyon: Protibondhokota O Amader Koronio” on 27 July, 2019 at WUB Permanent Campus, Uttara. The seminar was attended by Dr. Serajul Islam Choudhury, Prominent educationist and professor emeritus, Dhaka University as the chief guest and Dr. Md. Siddiqur Rahman, former director of IER and education specialist, Dhaka University was present as the special guest. Dr. Mushfiq M. Chowdhury, Professor, Department of Management, Dhaka University delivered the inaugural speech at the seminar. Professor Dr. Abdul Mannan Choudhury, Founder & Vice Chancellor, World University of Bangladesh (WUB) chaired the seminar. Principals and departmental heads of various colleges located at Uttara, Pallabi and Mirpur participated in this seminar.

In the seminar, the speakers emphasized on the development of research in the field of improvement of higher education. According to them, to ensure quality education, every teacher must have to have forehand knowledge about the topic which they want to teach to the students.

In the inaugural speech, Dr. Mushfiq M. Chowdhury, Professor, Department of Management, Dhaka University and Chief Advisor, World University of Bangladesh said “The goal of World University of Bangladesh is to implement quality and work-oriented education to get rid of the curse of economic development and unemployment. World University of Bangladesh has been given the opportunity to Diploma Engineers to become a BSc Engineer for the first time in Bangladesh. Besides, we are the first to launch Mechanical Engineering program in South Asia.”

He also said “We are now full member of ACBSP, AACSB, ITO, AUAP, Association of Commonwealth University and International Association of University. Therefore, this university is now equivalent to other world class universities. World University of Bangladesh is making relentless efforts to improve the quality of education. We are offering a large number of scholarships, loan for the students and waivers of 10% to 100% for poor and meritorious students.”

Md. Siddiqur Rahman, Former Director, IER, Dhaka University said “students should give importance to creative subjects. We should also create a good environment for the students. The better the environment, the better they will learn. Many people raised questions about education being low budget. But budget is not a big deal. It is possible to do a lot of things in a large range even with low budget if desired. It is a good thing that the World University of Bangladesh has looked at that.”

Chief Guest Emeritus Professor Dr. Serajul Islam Choudhury pointed out a number of problems and obstacles. The first hurdle is the loss of students’ interest. The interest we had when we were students and the interest of current-day students has lot of difference. The second obstacle is, students’ internalization capacity has decreased drastically. In this case, teachers will have to see if the students can accept them while teaching.

The chief guest also said, “The University is not a factory, the university is not a technical institution, the university is not a training center. The university is a socio-cultural institution. The budget for such institutions should be increased.”

Professor Dr. Abdul Mannan Choudhury, Founder & Vice Chancellor, World University of Bangladesh (WUB) said that “Those of us who founded private universities, all had different dreams. If we can provide Good teachers in the classroom, then it is possible to teach good quality even under the tree.” He thanked all the guests on the seminar.

A number of participating principals and heads of departments expressed their need of ways and means of enhancing quality education. At the end, the Vice Chancellor promised to keep alive such interaction from time to time and sought help to realize the dream of quality and utilitarian education at the university.
The seminar was also attended by Morsheda Chowdhury, Treasurer; Heads of the al Departments, teachers and students of World University of Bangladesh.
