WORKSHOP ON “QS MASTERCLASS ON UNIVERSITY RANKINGS & RATINGS”

A workshop titled “QS Masterclass on University Rankings & Ratings” was held at the Council Bhaban of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) on 9 July 2019 at 10.00 AM. The workshop was facilitated by Mr. Ashwin Fernandez, Regional Director – Middle East, North Africa & South Asia, QS Quacquarelli Symonds, UK. This workshop was sponsored by World University of Bangladesh (WUB).
Dr. Mashiur Rahman, Economic Affairs Adviser to the Honorable Prime Minister, Government of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh was present as the Chief Guest and Professor Dr. Abdul Mannan Choudhury, Vice Chancellor, World University of Bangladesh (WUB) was present as the special guest. Professor Dr. Saiful Islam, Vice Chancellor, Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) chaired the program.


Moshiur Rahman, the Prime Minister’s Economic Affairs Advisor stressed the importance of primary and secondary education in the development of higher education. He also urged public and private universities of the country to come forward for ranking and rating. He said, “Good quality improvement of education at the primary and secondary levels of the country is very important. Although there are many high school computer labs in rural areas, students are not allowed to go to computer. I think the education of primary and secondary is very weak. That is why there are weaknesses in higher education too. It must be strengthened.”

He also said, “In the context of today there are many universities, whose ranking is important. The quality will be ranked in order to brand themselves. By organizing such workshops, universities of Bangladesh will be better in future.”

Professor Dr. Saiful Islam, Vice Chancellor, Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) urged the government to increase the allocation for quality publications, research and research. He said about the university rankings, “The publication and research information will be regularly updated and published on the website of the university. Then the University Ranking companies will get the correct ideas about the universities of this country.” He also said “We have nothing to be frustrated, the only thing is that we have to project ourselves, we have to show that what we have.”

Professor Dr. Abdul Mannan Choudhury, Vice Chancellor, World University of Bangladesh (WUB) speaking as a special guest, called upon the private universities to undertake advanced research. He said, “Right from the 2003 I was very much involve in appealing the slogaan of quality education. We contributed 80 lac taka enlacing quality education. We have ensured to promote QE and we shall continue doing so.” He also said, “Recently Nepal Tribhuvan University also came in the world ranking position, but we have not achieved that position anywhere over the last several years. But this year the name of the WUB came in the Times Higher Education ranking.”

Professor Dr. M. Rafiqul Islam, Department of Neval Architecture and Marine Engineering, BUET, said “after nearly 50 years of independence, Bangladesh deserves to have at least a few universities included in respectable world university ranking system. Ranking is important not only for the national prestige, but also for appealing hi-tech foreign investment.”
