The Department of Electrical and Electronic
Engineering of the World University of Bangladesh organized a seminar titled “Nuclear
Power and Sustainable Development: Current Status and Prospects of Bangladesh”
on 21 November 2025 at the Founding Treasurer Morsheda
Choudhury Auditorium. Students, faculty members, and invited guests attended
the event, which highlighted Bangladesh’s progress in nuclear energy and its
contribution to sustainable development.
The seminar was attended by Professor Dr.
M. Nurul Islam, Pro-Vice Chancellor of WUB, as Chief Guest, and Professor
Zaki Imam, Registrar, as Special Guest. Dr. Mohammad Shawkat
Akbar, former Chairman of the Bangladesh Atomic Energy Commission
(BAEC), delivered the keynote speech, while Prof. Dr. M. Quamruzzaman,
Head of the EEE Department and Dean of the Faculty of Science and Engineering,
chaired the session.
In his presentation, Dr. Akbar began by
discussing nuclear projects and the broader nuclear program undertaken by
Bangladesh. He then highlighted the current progress of the country’s major
initiative, the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant, explaining how it plays a vital
role in ensuring long-term, stable, and sustainable electricity generation. He
emphasized that nuclear power is an essential component of Bangladesh’s future
energy landscape and a strong complement to the nation’s sustainable
development goals.
Dr. Akbar also addressed the widespread
misconceptions circulating across the country regarding the safety and
perceived danger of the Rooppur plant. He clarified that modern nuclear
technology adheres to strict international safety standards and that
misinformation often creates unnecessary fear. His explanations aimed to build
confidence among students and the public about the plant’s safety and
importance.
The event was organized with support from the IEEE
WUB Student Branch and the WUB EEE Club, who
contributed to the coordination and promotion of the program. The EEE
Department expressed its intention to continue arranging informative and
technology-focused events to enhance student learning and awareness
