Department of Business Administration, World University of Bangladesh organized a seminar at the auditorium of the main campus of WUB highlighting the prospects and problems of co-operative societies in Bangladesh. The seminar was divided into inaugural session and technical session.
~Iapt. (Retcl.) A B Tajul Islam, MP, State Minister, Ministry of Liberation War Affairs, Government of the People's Republic of Bangladesh graced the occasion as chief guest in the inaugural session. The special guests were Prof. Dr. A H M Habibur Rahman, Chairman, Sonali Bank Ltd.; Md Mujibur Rahman, Acting Managing Director, SME Foundatiom Dr M A Kamal, Former DG, National Academy for Planning and Development and the hon'ble chairperson of the Board of Trustees of WUB. Morsheda Choudhury. Hon'ble Vice Chancellor of WUB and valiant freedom-fighter, educationist and columnist Prof. Dr Abdul Mannan Chouclhury chaired the session.
The eminent guests in their speeches focused on the prospects of co-operative societies and suggested various ways to overcome the problems. Prof. Dr A H M Habibur Rahman explained the role of the cooperative societies in the development process and suggested guidelines for its successful implementtion.
Md Mujibur Rahman described the role of SME Foundation to show how it also works for the progress of our country by arranging funds through other banks for young entrepreneurs.
Dr M A Kamal highlighted the beginning of co-operative societies in Bangladesh. He emphasized on the renovation of the system and structure of co-operative society. Also, he praised this initiative of WUB as contemporary and useful because universities can play a vital role in bringing out new ideas and thus throw challeges to enforce progress of our country.
Hon'ble chairperson of Board of Trustees of WUB Morsheda Choudhury said that the system of co-operative society has many possibilities and at the same time has many problems. She added that the concerned persons should go to the root of the problems to solve them.
Hon'ble state minister Capt. (Retd.) A B Tajul Islam MP stated that the new generation has the pledge to work for the nation. They have the patriotic spirit, which will lead them to fulfill the dream of the freedom fighters of seeing a developed nation. He requested the banks to decrease the interest rates.
Prof. Dr Abdul Mannan Choudhury, in his speech focused on the origin of cooperative societies in Bangladesh. He uttered the name of Akhter Hamid Khan, who is the initiator of the concept of cooperative society in this country. He also thanked all for coming to the seminar.
In the technical session, three papers were presented: "Overview of the Cooperative Societies in Bangladesh" by the team of 41st Batch, BBA (WUB); "Co-operative Society: Perspective of Women Empowerment" by Halima Begum, Resource Person, Program Officer, Ministry of Wormen's and Children's Affairs, Government of the People's Republic of Bangladesh; 'A Study on the Role of Co-operative Society for Marketing Agricultural Products in Bangladesh" by Mr A B M Siddique, Assistant Professor, Dept of Business Administration, WUB.
The third part of the seminar was the examination procedure. The students of Business Administration appeared in an exam based on the three papers presented. The program ended with the Certificate Award Ceremony - Prof. Dr Abdul Mannan Choudhury, Hon'ble Vice Chancellor, WUB was present as chief guest to give away the certificates
